County Hall Bound. By Geniusofdespair

I am going to see what is up with the LED Billboards and the special taxing district (article in the Miami Herald today). It looks like Gimenez threw someone under the bus:

In a memo sent last week, Gimenez said the former director of the taxing-district division was “removed” and the agency reorganized. An audit is under way.

If the Former Director is Don Tok, he was in the drop program and had to leave, he was not removed. I hope he will consider speaking out about what really happened. Gimenez was elected to be the person to take the fall not blame his staff. He always dodges the bullet by firing at someone else.

Anyway here is a very happy (painted with a peace-love design) car to look at while I drive in rush hour to County Hall to check out the circus.

If anything is happening I will post it here.

Strong loan growth continues at South Florida-based banks in Q1 - Database

South Florida banks started off 2015 with a bang, continuing strong loan growth through the first three months of the year. Seven local banks generated more than $50 million in new loans and leases in the first quarter of 2015. The Business Journal compiled key performance numbers from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. for all active 55 South Florida-based banks, including two recently acquired banks, into a database. Click through the categories to sort data and see how the banks ranked in terms…

LIVE REPORT: Circus at County Hall. By Geniusofdespair

9:15 am: Taxi Drivers are lined up honking their horns in protest of Uber. There are people lining up for the Special Taxing District discussion, and the Homeless. People are here to discuss LED signs --- against changes to the county ordinance. Mark Sarnoff and Willie Gort are here from the City of Miami. Wait I have to go pee.

Back. All the lobbyists are here in chambers or the ante room. The public? They are lined up downstairs. So many Lobbyists no room for the people in here.

They are still giving awards and stuff. 10 am. Stupid Osterholt is watching the Mayor who is talking to Willie Gort while Commissioner Moss is talking. Not a seat left in here. Lobbyists are saving seats. Public Hearing is starting. Mayor is now talking to Lobbyist Ron Book.

Sarnoff, Francis Suarez and Gort are talking about the new homeless program sponsored by Camillus House. Ron Book is not listening still talking to the Mayor. Mayor Regalado just walked in.

Mayor Regalado speaking about homeless problem. Gimenez is talking to Osterholt not listening. Mayor Gimenez now talking to County Clerk - not listening.

10:43 -- not one citizen has spoken. I have to move my car at noon. The Mayor has finally sat down. They are all talking about 7a --- making marijuana possession a civil infraction. The chair was waving a bundle of yellow speaker cards, he said he has 200 speaker cards. That is a lot. Each person has 2 minutes. Half the people are downstairs as there is not enough room up here (all the lobbyists are up there.)

The public hearing begins at 10:51am. This is crazy. They are speaking on so many subjects the Agenda hasn't even been set. This is the general public hearing. Talking about homeless. Mayor walking around.

Okay Ron Book got everyone here to talk about the homeless trust. They have organized, they have uniforms, it is all about homeless. Apparently I AM WRONG. It is bad blood between Camillus House and The Homeless Trust---- a pissing match. The other side motivated and brought the speakers. Speaking of pissing the homeless want porta-pottys too. It is 11:39 still going on. People are supporting the MAT program. They like to sleep on mats outside. The Mat program is sponsored by Camillus House. Have to go --- noon. Too boring. Book must be furious. His hold on the Homeless Trust is waning.

The Special Taxing District, time certain at 9:30 am, heard at 4:44pm.

Commissioners Levine Cava, Bovo and Chair Monestime

Taxi drivers aren't very happy with UBER.

People waiting to speak in the First floor lobby. The Commission Chamber is filled.

Ron Book, Jack Osterholt and Mayor Gimenez chatting. Who is the dominant one? The Mayor has his tell on -- head tilt. Ron Book is very unhappy. It appears there was a power grab from his Homeless Trust to Camillus House. All the homeless were talking about the training and other perks offered by Camillus house that the Homeless Trust doesn't do.

Serena Williams is Officially Part of Taylor Swift’s Clique

If the world were a high school, Taylor Swift’s friend group would be the popular crowd that every girl is dying to get into. While her exclusive clique is composed of models, actresses, singers and one Scottish DJ, Tay may have just added an athlete to her inner circle, as Serena Williams joined the gang onstage during a “Bad Blood” performance in London’s Hyde Park.

It’s no surprise that Serena, the planet’s most lucrative female athlete and queen bee of the sporting world, got invited to sit at the coolest table in the cafeteria. But just three days prior to attending the concert, Serena tweeted that “Bad Blood” was her “anthem” and she couldn’t wait to see T-Swift in London, leading us to believe that the world’s No. 1 tennis player was a fangirl just like the rest of us wannabes.

How naive we were.

No stranger to large crowds, Serena showed up onstage to greet 65,000 spectators. Her black and white ensemble matched the rest of the crew’s outfits, further affirming her status as Swift sidekick.

After the show, Serena posted a picture with Caroline Wozniacki, who was apparently not good enough to join the other top Swifties for the “Bad Blood” performance. Try again when you get your first grand slam, Caro.

Univision does to Trump what corporate advertisers ought to do, to Roger Ailes and Rupert Murdoch, every day ... by gimleteye

Donald Trump is a ridiculous human being judging his public persona. One wants to be careful about name calling, because God knows we all qualify at some point for having our efforts at being meaningful hung out to dry. Public figures, though, are different cats.

It is in the public realm that Donald Trump is ridiculous, and he is a candidate for the GOP nomination for president and he did make offensive, racist comments against the Mexican people in his first media appearance as candidate.
In response to his ethnic baiting, the Spanish-language broadcaster -- Univision -- made an appropriate decision to block Trump as a corporate content provider from its network. (Trump is part owner of the Miss Universe franchise.) In return, Trump blocked Univision executives from his golf club adjacent to Univision headquarters in Doral. In return, the Univision CEO posted an Instagram photo showing Trump side-by-side America's latest racist standard-bearer and mass murderer, Dylann Roof.

For all Trump's ridiculous-ness, his race and ethnic baiting triggered a response by a media giant that deserves closer reflection by corporate advertisers because the same appeal to gut reflexes like race-baited fear is what animates Fox News, Rupert Murdoch and Roger Ailes, his Josef Goebbels.

Fox News "commentators" are run by Ailes. They are his versions of Trump only screened through focus groups and market testing. Ailes makes sure his on-air shock troops are quick-witted enough to avoid rolling public condemnation (as opposed to the biting, nipping commentary of The Daily Show and Jon Stewart and the blogs). Their effect is the same as Trump: they stir fear and anxiety for personal advantage, power and fortune.

Trump's coif is doctored as Fox's "Fair and Balanced".

Corporate advertisers should recognize that the goading, simmering fear and anxiety underlying Fox News commentators is harmful to their brands and harmful to America. If they did, they would abandon Fox the way Univision abandoned Trump.

Roger Ailes and Rupert Murdoch are both too savvy to allow their talking heads to cross the line from fear mongering to overt race and ethnic baiting (the way Donald Trump did). Viewers need to find ways to send corporate advertisers the news: we do not approve your messages to America.

South Florida's business community reacts to Supreme Court ruling legalizing same-sex marriage

Love wins — as does Florida's business community, with Friday's U.S. Supreme Court ruling legalizing same-sex marriage nationwide. The U.S. is now the 21st country to legalize same-sex marriage. Gay and lesbian couples can now marry and have their marriages recognized in all 50 states, a constitutional right that's expected to have major economic impacts, especially for Florida's tourism and event businesses. Miami-Dade County's tourism bureau was literally jumping for joy after the announcement.…

A new strategy for our 50 Fastest-Growing Companies list

Our annual list of the region’s 50 fastest-growing companies will now pay increased attention to South Florida’s biggest companies. To create the list, we accept submissions from private companies, calculate their percentage revenue growth over two years, and rank them accordingly. We’ll keep doing that, only now we will be creating two Top 25 lists: one for companies with less than $25 million in revenue, and another for those with more than $25 million in revenue. This is a more balanced…

Outback Steakhouse co-founder Tim Gannon offers recipe for success at Palm Beach BDB luncheon

You've probably eaten at Outback Steakhouse, and maybe even the fast-casual eatery PDQ. Tim Gannon had a role in leading both of those concepts to success, and he's not shy about telling you about how he did it — unless you ask him about the recipe for the Bloomin' Onion. Gannon was the keynote speaker at the Business Development Board of Palm Beach County Entrepreneur Luncheon on Thursday at the Palm Beach County Convention Center, where he told 200 attendees about his entrepreneurial journey…
