Obit: Goodbye Crusty Old Friend Dr. James Jude. By Geniusofdespair

James Jude is considered the father of CPR and he was a brilliant heart surgeon. However to us at the Urban Environment League he was so much more. He was a tireless advocate to make our community better. Jim was a long time Board Member of the UEL.

I call him crusty but he would call me the same. I remember the day he told off George Burgess in his office when he was County Manager. Jim always told it like he saw it. Jim was so caring, so smart. I am honored to have known him. The passing of Jim Jude is a loss for us all in Miami Dade County and apparently all those who were saved by CPR:
Before Jude’s brainstorm, which led to hundreds of scientific articles and two of his books, including Fundamentals of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, patients were out of luck until they reached a hospital. There, before CPR, doctors had to slit the chest to manually massage the heart to try and get it beating again

One of the shady recipients of Walker’s WEDC welfare faces criminal investigation (finally)

As blogger lufthase puts it, “If WEDC had done a simple search on Green Box chairman Ronald Van Den Heuvel before making this loan, they’d have found at least 8 six-figure judgements from 2008 to 2011 against him or the many, many companies he has registered at the same address as Green Box.” Basically, Scott more »

Netjet heads to Cuba ... by gimleteye

Most of Miami is chomping on the bit of news that embassies in Havana and Washington are about to open, but hardliners against Obama's policy change to Cuba are already fading away faster than climate change deniers.

I met a Netjet subcontractor who is about to relocate to Cuba, to help prepare infrastructure for fixed based operators and the opening of hundreds of airfields.

Campaigns: Carlos Gimenez's PAC and Wayne Rosen Gives Heavily To Barbara Jordan and Dennis Moss. By Geniusofdespair

Let's Look at Carlos Gimenez's Campaign Expense Again for his PAC MIAMI DADE RESIDENTS FIRST
A hotel stay at the Empire is $309 per night ($278.19 when discounted). I don't know how they got to New York City from the Airport and back for $41.16. That sounds like a one way ride to me. Gimenez got a $20,000 donation from the owners of this hotel Amsterdam. One reader said, after reading the 7 page expose on (Amsterdam and its owners) in New York Magazine:
Now we know how Gimenez plans to eliminate homelessness in downtown Miami: invite the slumlords of New York to buy up properties that can warehouse the downtrodden. His PAC took a $20,000 check from a New York family run business that specializes in exploiting government programs to house the homeless. That should grease the wheels for the New Yorkers to bring their brand of caring for the homeless to Miami. And Gimenez will be at the airport to greet them. He probably has Osterholdt looking for run down apartment complexes that will fit their slimy business model. How does a PAC spend over $1,000 for a night at a $180 a room hotel? Was there a delegation traveling with the Mayor? Or, did they treat themselves to the Champagne Room? This is a some sick stuff. Why worry about poop on the streets when the mayor is putting out the welcome mat for some real pieces of shit?
Now I am wondering what that multiple hour long homeless meeting WAS REALLY ABOUT. Apparently the Mayor has been in touch with these New York slumlords developers.

County Commissioner Barbara Jordan's Campaign Report

Commissioner Dennis Moss's Campaign Report

Plenty of money in both Miami Dade County Campaign Reports from Wayne Rosen Developer and (who seems to be Homestead's OVERLORD). Land Baron, Shores etc. is Wayne Rosen as well. County Commissioner Dennis Moss also got a windful of Marlin's Money. Look at addresses as well as names.

David Beckham Is a Flawless Human at Wimbledon

David Beckham, flawless human being, effortlessly caught a ball when it ricocheted off a wall into the stands during a doubles match at Wimbledon. Naturally, he looked positively picturesque while doing so, unlike the rest of us mere morals who would have cowered in fear at the sight of an object flying toward our face. Then, he casually tossed the ball back to the players as if his throwing arm weren’t hindered by the heavy fabric of a $3,000 suit.

President Obama: Take On The Nation's Utilities And Climate Change ... by gimleteye

On climate change adaptation, the hour is very late. It was only seven years ago that the mainstream press began reporting on the likelihood that warming temperatures at the arctic extremes could begin releasing vast quantities of methane gas into the atmosphere, potentially doubling in a fast period of time the amount of global warming gases already overloading the atmosphere. With a summer that has produced astoundingly high temperatures and forest fires in arctic north, that hypothesis is coming to pass.
Current fire map, 7/11/2015, at the Alaska Interagency Coordination Center

It is no surprise that climate scientists, as a result of data pouring in, are beginning to publicly express what they privately experience: despair.

So what is the single, effective step that President Obama could take on climate change?

Obama has already inveighed in language approaching that of Pope Francis about the risks and moral imperative to recognize climate change as an existential threat. The response by the Republican Congress is to propose legislation prohibiting federal scientists, the Pentagon, and US military from talking about climate change.

President Obama has issued an executive order -- also challenged by Republicans -- to press operating changes on industries to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. It is not enough. Not enough by far.

President Obama must step up to the bully pulpit and demand a fundamental rearrangement of the nation's utilities. Climate change is not waiting for Americans to take incremental steps toward change.

This will be hard because a lot of political capital exchanged between the nation's utilities and the president on his way to the White House. However President Obama does consult the foremost experts on climate change. He reads threat summaries from the military and understand the terrible outcomes for his children's generation and beyond because of global warming.

Unless he takes on the utilities, President Obama will be remembered for not doing enough.

In his ascent to the bully pulpit on this point the president should take energy from states he won in his campaigns. States like Florida have gone backwards on climate change adaptation because of a gerrymandered Republican majority in the state legislature and an intransigent governor, Rick Scott.

Florida Power and Light, for example; a wealthy, stubborn economic elite obstructing consumer adoption of solar energy. In Florida, citizens have been forced to mount a statewide ballot referendum, Floridians for Solar Choice, to compel the legislature to open up consumer availability of solar energy; an incomplete avenue of incentives shuttered by Republicans in the last legislative session.

Some of us blinked our eyes at the recent Fourth of July news that a young Maine man -- to amuse his friends -- lit a firework mortar on his head and killed himself instantly. You want to shake the nearest teenager and ask, how stupid can one be? But isn't that what adults are doing with the politics of climate change and our failure to act? Our willingness to let utilities determine our future course of action based on past financial performance is like lighting a firework mortar on the top of our collective head.

President Obama: take on the nation's utilities now.

There is a reason that solar panels are not on every unused industrial park warehouse in the Sunshine State, like the ones you see when you fly into Miami International Airport. Florida Power and Light is blocking solar energy owned, maintained and transacted by private entities.

Please Mr. President, you have run your final election. Whether it knows it or not, civilization is running for survival. This is the moment to make clear that how our nation produces and consumes electricity and transports goods and services has never been and will never be an affair of the "free market" and less so now, than ever, given the threats. In delivering this message you will have no help from the GOP but you must speak to the American people: this is your last chance as president to define how you will be remembered by every child you kiss and hug for the rest of your life.

Get on the bully pulpit. Take on the nation's utilities.
