A look back at the year Staples tried to merge with Office Depot ... again

When Staples announced that it intended to buy Boca Raton-based Office Depot in February, it was déjà vu all over again. The Framingham, Massachusetts-based firm, No. 1 in the world for office supplies, aimed to join with its smaller competitor to cut costs, just like Office Depot did with OfficeMax in 2013. Starboard Value LP, a New York-based activist investor with majority interests in both Staples and Office Depot, seemed to again play a large role in the acquisition. The company urged the…

The arrogance of Jeb Bush and the influence of Big Sugar ... By gimleteye

Finally, an investigative report that penetrates the hard but brittle shell of Jeb Bush. Read Dexter Filkins in the New Yorker on Jeb and his failed Everglades experiments. For all Jeb did for Big Sugar, it is ironic the Fanjuls have thrown all their weight behind Marco Rubio, Jeb's former legislative whip on all things pro-sugar.

The Meeting Julie Dick Did her Op Ed on is going on right now (UDB Line movement request). By Geniusofdespair

Pepe Diaz the puppet. You always know what he will say...what ever the developer said. He is arguing about the size of our wellfield protection zone that it should have been made smaller to not to interfere with this property.

Juan Zapata (the commissioner of the district) made a motion to transmit and deny. He doesn't believe the covenant means anything that the developer offered to put on. Only Barbara Jordan believed the covenant and SHE was one of the Commissioners that lifted it on the Brown application. What a creepy thing to do...to act like it has meaning when Barbara Jordan knows she helped make it meaningless by lifting the covenant against residential on the last application that moved the line. At least Juan Zapata wasn't fooled by the covenants.

He made the same motion for Green City that failed. Zapata had Souto, Jordan, Bovo, Barreiro (will someone run against him), and of course Pepe Diaz. The developer begged that someone locate Monestime.

It is a 6 to 5 vote in favor to transmit and deny. Monestime not there. It needed 7. Absent Districts 4 and 2 districts. No: Districts 3, 6, 7, 8, 9.

Zapata made a motion to deny, that passed.

Drew Martin from the Sierra Club Everglades Committee with that Dick Rep. Erik Fresen sitting behind Martin. (This "DICK" reference is not to be confused with Julie Dick). Erik is working for the developer

Metropica breaks ground on YOO condo building

The YOO at Metropica condominium broke ground on Tuesday as part of the massive mixed-use project in Sunrise. The 28-story tower is being constructed by K Group Holdings and Trillist Cos. just west of the Sawgrass Mills mall. Most condo projects in South Florida are east of Interstate 95, so this is a good test to see how deep the market is for the stronger suburban neighborhoods. The proximity to the mall, which is popular with tourists, could help YOO as Metropica draws buyers. It's also near…

How AP and the WI press does damage control for Governor Drunken Sailor

Yet again I get the impression that Associated Press does whatever it can to protect and/or repair Scott Walker’s image.   Compare the headlines and stories on Walker’s recent FEC filing: From Washington Post (author – Jenna Johnson): How Scott Walker spent $90,000 a day to lose an election   From U.S. News and World Report more »

Everybody didn’t have access to the Democratic Party debate

The editor of Buzzflash at Truthout recently wrote that, “By offering the debates on television only to paid subscribers of television packages that included CNN and Fox News, the most important political interaction between candidates for president of the United States was, essentially, privatized.” If you’re living with a net-enabled digital device seemingly glued to your more »
